How to Beat Taleo (Oracle) ATS

Taleo has one of the worst parsers in the industry - keep formatting extremely simple

Use a plain .docx file with zero graphics, tables, columns, or text boxes

Do not use headers or footers - Taleo ignores them completely

List each job as: Company Name, Job Title, Dates, then bullet points - this structure parses most reliably

Avoid special characters, em dashes, and curly quotes - Taleo may render them as garbled text

Use 'MM/YYYY' or 'Month Year' date formats - Taleo's parser chokes on other formats

Put your name and contact info on the first line of the document body, not in a header

Keep section headings plain text without any formatting (no underlines, borders, or shading)

Taleo uses keyword matching more heavily than most modern ATS - include exact phrases from the job posting

Copy key requirements verbatim into your skills section (e.g., if they say 'data analysis', don't just write 'analytics')

Include both the full term and abbreviation (e.g., 'Structured Query Language (SQL)')
